Let’s change our conversations about education, so they’re as intentional and agile as we are.
Agile Learning Centers restore the joy to learning by creating intentional cultures that support self-directed education.
The Agile Learning Ecosystem is a rapidly growing global network of micro schools, homeschooling collectives and facilitators who share tools, practices, and resources, seeking to create a new educational paradigm that is adaptive to the people and places it serves.
Here’s Research Psychologist Peter Gray on quick primer on the basics of Self-Directed Education (SDE).
Do you want to develop partnership culture with the children in your life while nurturing them to be intrinsically motivated, happy people?
Let’s talk about innovative education. About play and technology. About teaching self-teachers and supporting a community of unschoolers.
Do you want to transform education as we know it?
ALF Summer is for people who want to facilitate intentional culture creation and self-directed education.
It’s for parents and professionals who are looking for radical and practical ways to transform education at home and in the world.
It’s for social entrepreneurs and change-makers interested in starting an ALC, a Democratic School, a Self-Directed homeschool group, or any other kind of radical learning programme with children at the centre.
ALF Summer is an immersive, experiential training in facilitation of Self-Directed Education.
Join us for 10 life-affirming days in the stunning surroundings of Stagones eco village, Evia Island.
What does Agile Learning mean?
Self-directed: Humans are natural learners. When children get to follow their passions, they engage deeply, learning more quickly and thoroughly – covering years of content in weeks at the time they choose to learn it.
Intentional Culture: At ALCs children feel they are heard, they belong, and they make a difference. As social creatures, we thrive in this kind of vibrant community which builds our confidence, heightens our communication skills, and calls forth our best selves.
Agile Management Tools: We use practical and concrete tools to make these lofty-sounding ideals real and reliable. These tools and practices provide visible feedback, effective self-management, clarity of purpose, and easy integration of new patterns as needs change.
Agile Learning Facilitators convene a space for new facilitators, parents, and members of ALC startups to co-create self-directed learning experiences which reflect the needs and offerings of both adults and children.
We’ll start and end each day together, and generate the content of the program as well as a schedule for each day leveraging the same kinds of tools for self-organisation that we use in ALCs. Don’t expect a prefabricated “curriculum.” This is experiential learning — learning through doing.
Participants will gain experience and confidence in facilitating in their family life, at an ALC or in another Self-Directed Education context. This is less about absorbing certain information, and more about learning to hold the space for learning, standing in authentic relationship with learners.
Join us on Evia Island, Greece for a two day ALC workshop, four day practicum facilitating at Nature Play ALC, three day Community Canvassing workshop (using ALC tools) and one day integration and closing ceremony.
Days 1 - 2: The Basics
Join us for a two-day introduction to facilitation and Agile Learning, where experienced facilitators will make offerings of theory, practice, and immersive experiences. Participants will also be invited to make offerings and hold spaces!
We’ll follow the rhythm an ALC keeps during school days: morning intention-setting, daily exploring, creation and play, then regrouping in the afternoon to reflect.
Days 3 - 6: Learn by Doing
This is where the kids join in! Here’s where the experiential learning really starts as we practice by doing together, holding a real Agile Learning Center together.
Participants are invited to take leadership roles, side by side with experienced facilitators and will have time to self-organize to go deeper into the discussions and projects related to their individual goals for the program.
Day 7 - 9: Community Canvas
From Day 7 we’ll initiate a 3 day deep dive to discover the Identity, Experience and Structures which informs the daily life on an Agile Learning Facilitator. Inspired by the Community Canvas toolkit, this hackathon-style group process will take the form of a series of offerings. It is therefore entirely optional, running alongside our regular daily schedule of diverse activities for children and adults.
We hope this mapping and problem-solving exercise has relevance for everyone, whether you’re an individual Agile Learning Facilitator, a representative of a local Agile Learning Community, or a member of the wider Agile Learning Ecosystem in which we all co-exist in our own unique way.
Day 9: Reflection and Feedback
An informal day for reflecting and debriefing together. This is the time for getting feedback via peer reviews, reflecting on the gaps in your own skills you’d like to close, and deepening relationships with other ALFs.
“The land is where our roots are. The children must be taught to feel and live in harmony with the Earth.”
- Dr. Maria Montessori
Let’s change up our conversations about education, so they’re as intentional and agile as we are.
Let's bring ALF Summer back to Evia Island this summer.
Full participation including food and accommodation (camping, with additional options available), will cost €1200 per adult. Applications are now open for a generous supply of scholarships places, offering discounts of €400 or €800 depending on your needs.
If these training fees are not affordable for you and your family please contact Marcus via email so we can work out a better plan together.
All children aged 5 - 15 will receive a standard 50% discount on adult fees, with no fee for under 5’s.
A wholesome and hearty breakfast, lunch and supper will be lovingly prepared by our hosts. Meals will be vegetarian and vegan friendly, and sourced locally from organic producers wherever possible. In 2017 we sourced over 70% of our food from local and organic suppliers.
Campsite facilities include hot showers, flushing and compost toilets, 2 x communal kitchens and a diversity of well shaded living spaces. Tents can be provided if requested in advance. In addition, more luxurious / comfortable options include an on-site cob / timber frame / straw bale tiny house and a choice of modern apartments in the nearby village (a 10 minute walk away).
Childcare will be provided during the workshop and closing ceremony. Participants’ children will attend the camp during the "learn by doing" and "community canvas" phases.
A full and professional quality translation into Greek language will be provided for the benefit of both adults and children.
We can offer recommendations on how to get here and for great places to stay and things to do in Athens, on request. We'll also provide a spreadsheet to help folks travel together and share costs.
Who's behind this?
ALF Summer Greece is being co-produced by a diverse and global team!
Our lead Agile Learning Facilitators will be Nariman Moustafa - founder of Mesahat ALC in Cairo and one of EUDEC 2018's keynote speakers - and Sierra Allen, an experienced ALF with Wildwood ALC and a co-founder of Startup Labs.
This training will be further supported by this event’s coherency holders and Nature Play’s very own ALFs-in-the-making, Marcus and Emily Letts, as well as Andreas and Stella, our host family and co-founders of Nature Play ALC.
We'll also be joined by Zoe Burgess - founder of Expression Education, the first Agile Learning Centre offering full time, formal education anywhere in Europe and another of EUDEC 2018's keynote speakers.
Finally, ALF Summer Greece is backed by EUDEC Greece, a groundbreaking umbrella network for the emerging Self-Directed Education (SDE) ecosystem in Greece. Amongst other invaluable contributions, EUDEC Greece co-founder and Ensoma founder Zoe Valerie will coordinate a team offering a full translation into the Greek language.
In addition to this core group of facilitators and coherency holders, participants may draw upon the supplementary experience of one of the ALC network’s co-founders, Eric Bear. Though not currently affiliated with the ALC network organisation, Bear’s insights - harvested during 5 years of daily ALF practice and fruitful ALC plantings across 3 continents - represent an invaluable resource.
